The last two months have brought some very interesting changes to the SEO world. For those who understand the back rooms of indexing and SEO, you should know that Google will do whatever it takes to provide relevant and high-quality results to its customers.

In a post on June 2, 2017, Google warned everyone to take time to consider their own Titles and Snippets (Descriptions), consider how they are structured on the pages of their website. Why is this so important and what does this mean.

What happened to DMOZ?

On March 17, 2017 DMOZ, an open directory project shut its doors for good. Previously Google had used these listings for titles and descriptions by using the NOODP directive. This mean change to the way you use content on your website. As far as DMOZ is considered, you no longer need to include the NOODP directive on your pages.

 



Where do we go from here?

It’s time to reevaluate the information on your website. If you own a blog it means going in and looking at the content and the meta information on each post. If your website has an abundant amount of web pages, this could be a big adventure. Thanks to Google’s penguin, you will get credit on a per page basis.

Those companies that cannot afford high dollars to pay to large SEO companies. Just because you aren’t large, doesn’t mean you aren’t important in your own local or national search results.

Everything in SEO starts with your keywords. You can find them in marketing, URL’s and the pages of your website. I won’t get into keywords here, I have other articles that you are welcome to reference on this subject.
What you need to know is what to do with your keywords, and how they affect your search ranking. What does your search ranking mean? Keywords are those words or phrases that are typed into the search bar on Google or any other favorite search engine. Your keywords are those that you hope to be found under.

How does Google use keywords?

When indexing websites Google has a simple pattern, that is easy for you to follow.

1. Page content

The information on your web page tells your readers and the search engines what information is contained within. If a subject is important to your page, it should be clear in the content (text, images, video) that the readers are seeing. It only makes sense that Google is going to look there first for information.

2. Meta Tags

Meta Title and descriptions are placed in the headers of your pages specifically for search engines.


Title Tags – Every web-page has a title, it is that title at the top of your browser. Your title tag is one of the most important SEO tools that you have. You can either be proactive and determine the content or allow the browser to determine it for you. When you don’t take a stand here, you may find your indexed under information that you don’t want.

Some common mistakes that are found with title tags start when companies don’t determine the content that they want. This causes two types of concerns. First is being indexed with the search engines that don’t have relevance and the second is having the same title tag on every single page. Be proactive and creative here. Set your title tags.

Description Tags – In the past, these tags were just used for the information that shows up in the description section of the search results. It’s that information that the reader sees when they put a search in Google and they get a list of results.
Create your own descriptions with short specific sentences (suggested length 70 characters). Avoid looking like an advertisement, spamming your product or services here. Create a description that is intriguing yet informative. Give your readers a reason to pick your website over the others. If you want to improve your click through rate with the search engines, focus on the information that you put in the description. It is the information that Google customers see.

This should be enough to get the attention of Google and the other search engines. If you think you are ready to go one step further, consider schema.org and try adding some schemas to your content. Maybe you are ready for some Twitter Cards and knowledge graph cards.
